As you make progress, you’ll gain access to more weapons, abilities and collectibles. With whatever weapon you have equipped, you set off on a hazard-filled adventure to meet your fate.
The game quickly puts you in the face of danger and it’s up to you to decide how you want to go about things. If you’re expecting an extensive tutorial to show you the ropes, you’re not going to find that here. But after that, you’re pretty much on your own.

The beginning does a good job explaining the fundamentals to you via designated markings on the floor that briefly tell you what to do, such as how to maneuver, pick up items, use weapons or approach your next target. You’re equipped with a measly broken sword that is barely capable of doing any serious damage. Customization and the story are pretty basic based on today’s standards, but most of the focus is pinned on the gameplay.Īs an action RPG, Dark Souls throws you in the shoes of a character who starts off with practically nothing. While this may influence your playstyle early on, you eventually come to realize that your first decisions don’t really matter as you could mold your character however you’d like. You start off by creating your own character by selecting a sex, class, physique and gift to aid you on your journey.
The latest re-release is the Nintendo Switch version of Dark Souls: Remastered.ĭark Souls is set in a fantasy universe that’s been inflicted with a massive curse that affected all of its inhabitants, including the main protagonist. Originally released back when the Wii was considered a current-gen console, Dark Souls has been ported to several platforms ever since its debut. Dark Souls is arguably the most popular “hardcore game” of this decade and it earns that title in every right. But difficult games still do exist and typically cater to those who deem themselves as hardcore gamers. Whatever you think, kudos to ‘Crowbcat’ for what was clearly a lot of work.Modern games nowadays are often criticized for being too easy or offering no substantial challenges. As above though, at least Blighttown kinda works these days. In fact, using the above video as a comparison, I’m not sure if (at least in terms of visuals) which I preferred.

Was this really a remaster or was it just a cynical ‘final patch’ version of the original game?Įven as a massive fan of the series (over 1000 hours clocked in the franchise) I must admit that while I enjoyed the remaster, I wasn’t dazzled by it. This does, however, raise an interesting question.

Since the release of Dark Souls Remastered, a mod pack has already been made available to improve the visuals even further. Sure the visuals are a bit crisper and the fire/water/sludge effects are a lot stronger, but overall is there really that much difference? More accurately, is the difference that much better? I’m not so sure. Worse, aside from the aforementioned Blighttown, I can’t see much improved either! Overall though, the overwhelming opinion I take away is that in the grand scheme of things, I struggle to see what significant matters they changed. It is, actually, a lot easier to see these when they are side by side. Who Wins?Ĭomparing the two, you can clearly see the differences that exist.
As a massive fan of the series, I must confess that the only aspect I massively approved of was them finally fixing Blighttown.įollowing a very detailed bit of work by YouTuber ‘Crowbcat’ though, we have what is perhaps the most detailed like for like comparison video released to date. While the game declared itself as remastered, many people felt that the changes made were even barely notable or completely pointless. With it, I think it’s fair to say that the reaction overall was a bit mixed. Earlier this year Dark Souls Remastered launched for PC, Xbox One and PS4.
